Early 20th Century memorial plaque of Lord Kitchener

£320.00

An early 20th Century circular memorial plaque Lord Kitchener (Horatio Herbert Kitchener, 1st Earl Kitchener), a prominent British Field Marshal and statesman, the Secretary of State for War during the first two years of World War I. He is famously depicted on the “Lord Kitchener Wants You” recruiting poster. The bust itself is likely brass or bronze-finished metal, mounted on an round, dark-stained oak base. The inscription on the lower part of the bust reads: LORD KITCHENER DIED JUNE 5TH 1916, this date refers to the sinking of HMS Hampshire by a German mine off the Orkney Islands while carrying Kitchener to Russia; there were only 12 survivors and Kitchener was not among them. The item is a commemorative piece, likely produced shortly after his death to memorialize the military leader.  Circa 1920.
